666 is the mark of the Pope as the Beast in the Book of Revelation??

The number of the beast

This an attempt to answer  the one of the LIES being spread by our separated brethren like Ms. Ellen Gould White, Mr. Eliseo F. Soriano, Mr. Conrad J. Obligacion and other who believed that the Pope is the fulfillment of the Apocalyptic vision of St. John when he wrote the last book of the Bible (Revelation).

First, let us read what the Bible said about St.John's vision:

Revelation 1:11-18 New International Version

The Beast out of the Earth
¹¹ Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. ¹² It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. ¹³ And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. ¹⁴ Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. ¹⁵ The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. ¹⁶ It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, ¹⁷ so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name.
¹⁸ This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.^[e] That number is 666.

In the passage above talks about the beast that bears the number 666. The verses can stand alone and has explanation already. But there are people who likes to play with illusions..ehehehe! That is why an understandable passage they complicate it!

Let us dissect the verses in Rev.13:

Q. What is the MARK TO BE GIVEN to the people?

A. The NAME of the BEAST or the NUMBER of its NAME.


Q.What is the NUMBER of the BEAST?

A. According to the New Int'l Version the NUMBER of the BEAST is 666. Some versions of the Bibles are 616 not 666.

Here is an example of 616:

“Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”

While many Bible have footnotes saying the number translated from the original Greek could be 616, experts say new photographic evidence of an ancient fragment of papyrus from Revelation indeed indicates the number is indeed 616, instead of 666. -666 WRONG NUMBER OF PROPHETIC BEAST?

For me, I don't care about the number if which is true 666 or 616... In our Salvation History class it tells us that 6 is an imperfect number while 7 is the perfect number for the Hebrew people. Since it is a triple 6 it means that person bears that number is so wicked and imperfect.

But, as clear as the daylight sun that it is WRITTEN WORD for WORD that it is A NAME of the BEAST  NOT a TITLE... Since Vicarius Filii Dei is a TITLE then they got a wrong conclusion!

Q. Then who is the fulfillment of this passage?

A. According to the wikipedia an online encyclopedia..

Most scholars believe that the number of the beast (v.18) equates to Emperor Nero, whose name in Greek when transliterated into Hebrew, retains the value of 666, whereas his Latin name transliterated into Hebrew, is 616;^[4] The "mark of the beast" (v.16,17) which the narrative does not identify, is used to distinguish the beast's followers. It has been speculated that the "mark" may be an Imperial Roman seal, or the Emperor's head on Roman coins.

Domitian. Ethelbert Stauffer, a German Protestant theologian, said number 666 may refer to Roman emperor Domitian since he reigned at the time of the Apocalypse, as proposed in the Book of Revelation. Domitian was also said to be called "The Beast" secretly by Romans, Greeks, Christians and Jews.

As we have noticed that all the tiaras DO NOT BEAR the title Vicarius Filii Dei... From this point we can conclude that all the accusations are ALL LIES and this title is a PRODUCT of HALLUCINATION these desperate people.

Third, Vicarius Filii Dei IS NOT THE OFFICIAL TITLE of the Pope.

I'm writing this as a summary of my series, "Is 666 the Pope?"  But if you haven't read the series yet, this article would make a great preview for you. 

Part 1 of this series examined the sources theWorld Mission Society Church of God uses to support their claim against the Papacy.   I saw that they continue to have problems (like they did with their claims about the cross):

• misrepresenting information by taking it out of context
• presenting (or inventing?) 'facts' that are not in the referenced resource
• not being specific enough with their source so it can be verified
• selecting some information but neglecting to mention other important information from the same source

Part 2 established my focus, since the WMSCOG claims the Pope is the Antichrist whose number is 666.  Rather than looking at the general definition of an antichrist, I narrowed in on the Antichrist from Revelation 13, the beast from the sea whose number is 666.  In other words, the question became, "Is the Pope (Papacy) this Antichrist?" rather than "Is the Pope an antichrist?"

Then I examined the Scriptures and history to see how they matched up with the claims of the Pope-is-Antichrist teaching.  Scripture and the historical record give plenty of evidence to show that the Pope-is-Antichrist teaching is false, especially when combined with the particular doctrine of the World Mission Society Church of God.

Here is a summary of those claims compared to reality, and in relation to Revelation 13:

Rev. 13:1-2  The beast has 7 heads with 10 horns and 10 crowns.

similar to Dan. 7:7-8, 20, 24  The beast had 10 horns, and another little horn came up among them and plucked out 3 of the first horns.

Claim: When the Roman Kingdom fell, it split into 10 kingdoms.  Three of those kingdoms did not follow the doctrine of the Catholic Church and were subdued (or destroyed) because of that.  The last of them (Ostrogoths) was destroyed in A.D. 538.

Reality: When the Roman Kingdom fell, many kingdoms arose from it, but not the same kingdoms (or the same number) as claimed.  The Ostrogoths were still strongly defending themselves after 538 and were not defeated until 553.  By then, of the claimed 10 kingdoms, 5 kingdoms (not 3) had been subdued, and 1 of the kingdoms still had not entered Roman territory.  Also, adherence to Catholic doctrine was not a factor in whether or not a kingdom was conquered.

Rev. 13:3-4  The beast suffered a fatal wound that was healed.

Claim:  The papacy suffered a "deadly wound" in 1798 when the Pope was captured by Napoleon's general.  The wound has been healing since then.

Reality:  There are many occasions in the history of the Catholic Church that could be considered "deadly wounds" that have healed.  The verse implies only one fatal wound, not a series of struggles.  There is no reason to pick the particular wound of 1798 over any other.

Rev. 13:5  The beast was given authority to rule for 42 months

Claim:  This 42 months is 1260 days, which prophetically mean 1260 years.  The rule of the Catholic Church (papacy) began in 538 and continued until the "deadly wound" in 1798--exactly 1260 years as prophesied.

Reality:  There are several years that could be considered the beginning of the rule of the Catholic Church, but 538 is not one of them.  Significant historical markers of the Catholic Church do not fit into a prophecy of 1260 years.  Also, events that were supposed to be happening during these 1260 years would contradict other World Mission Society Church of God doctrine.

Rev. 13:6 / Dan. 7:25  The beast speaks blasphemy and tries to change the times and law.

Claim:  The Pope is made equal with God, and Catholic priests are said to forgive sin.  Both of those are examples of blasphemy.  The Catholic Church has changed the sacred calendar (substituting Sunday for Saturday Sabbath, Easter for Passover, instituting Christmas) and has tried to change God's law (omitting and changing some of the 10 Commandments).

Reality:  Official Catholic doctrine does not support the charge of blasphemy.  Calendar issues are dealt with in other posts on this blog.  The 10 Commandments are actually composed of 14 command statements.  The Catholic Church still holds to all 10 Commandments, but they have combined them differently.

Rev. 13:18  The number of the beast is 666.

Claim:  The Pope's mitre is inscribed with the title "Vicarius Filii Dei."  When you add up the values of the Roman numerals in this title, the total equals 666.

Reality:  There are many people whose names can add up to 666, depending on the method of computation.  Since the Catholic Church doesn't match the description of the beast as claimed, it doesn't matter whether or not Vicarius Filii Dei is an official title of the Pope or what number it forms.

Conclusion: The 1260 years in the prophecy more likely refers to a future, literal 3 1/2 year time period.  Could a Pope of the Catholic Church fulfill the prophecies of the beast in the future?  Possibly, but so could many other world leaders.  We can only speculate when thinking about the future.  The theory of the Catholic Church already fulfilling the prophecies of the Antichrist fails.

A Personal Note 

To tell you the truth, when I started researching for this series I didn't know what I would find.  I am not Catholic.  I wasn't very motivated to clear the Pope (and Roman Catholic Church) from these accusations of being the Antichrist, the beast whose number is 666.  I had heard the claim before, had even read the specific reasons, and thought it was a bit intriguing, but that's as far as I got.  I didn't think it really mattered to me.

The main reason I decided to research the claims was because some of you readers wrote and asked me (thank you for that!).  Now that I've done the research, I'm glad I did--not just because of the facts I've found, but also because I've learned something very important:

When you are confronted with a sensational claim such as this, don't just accept someone else's "research" about it--do your own!

According to my friend who is a neurologist and my partner in practice who is a neurosurgeon, sometimes after a head injury a person may experience seizures and have visions and hallucinations. In the 18th century, the medical field wasn't as advanced and as knowledgeable as what we have today. Someone hit with a rock on the head like Ellen Gould White would be observed for any increases in ICP as well as for seizure episodes if it happened in this era. And any visions or hallucinations would be attributed to her head injury.

About the Flores de Mayo. It is not an official doctrine but a pious practice which is of course Biblical.

Flores de Mayo is Spanish. The English is Flowers of May. But it is basically the Catholic devotion of offering the beautiful flowers of the Spring time [April-May] to remind us of the love story between Christ and His Church and of the Holy Women whose lives were like a fragrant flowers offered to God. The Biblical imagery of flowers in Spring time is very beautiful and is the source of many deep Christian Spirituality and Mysticism as these passages from SONG OF SONGS:

Song 1:14 "My beloved is unto me as a cluster of henna–flowers in the vineyards of En–gedi."

Song 2:12 "The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;"

The Book of Songs or Canticle of Canticles of Solomon speaks of a love story between God and the human soul. Here God is presented as a Male Lover, a handsome King and a Bridegroom while the human soul is presented as a Virgin, Pure and Beautiful Maiden.

Even though for Catholic theology that maiden refers to the Church and to every soul thirsting for God we cannot deny that the first lover of Christ among the Christian believers is the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the Virgin model of Christian purity of heart whose body and soul have been offered to God. That is why as the Song of Songs speaks of a Beloved Girl the Gospel of Luke speaks of Mary as "lubos na pinakamamahal ng Dios" [Lucas 1:28 Ang Biblia]. The literal English translation of which is "The Most Beloved of God". In other Bible translations it is rendered "full of grace" [Douay-Rheims Version] or "highly favored" [King James Version].

Mary loved Jesus more than her life because allowing herself to become pregrant not caused by her husband is punishable by death. She loved Jesus more than Joseph because she was ready to be rejected by Joseph for the sake of the Messiah. She loved the Lord more than family because she was ready to be forsaken or abandon by her family if ever she will be found pregnant prior to the wedding. Thus, Mary has the right to the claim of being the First Virgin beloved of God and loved Him in return. Thus, she has the right to exclaim:

Songs 2:1 "I am a Rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys."

Indeed, Mary lived in Nazareth a place famous for flowers such as lilies and roses being near the lake and also near the valleys. Thus the prophecy:

Isaiah 35:1 "The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the ROSE."

has been fulfilled in Israel at the coming of the Messiah, in the Church because of the graces given by the Messiah and of course in Mary because she is the Rose [the Virgin] in whom the Messiah burst forth like a shoot. Thus she is also filled with the 'Fullness of Grace'.

Thus, the spring flowers remind us of Mary and she in turn reminds us of our love of God. Thus, every May we gather flowers, then go to the Church or Chapel, and offer these flowers before the Altar of God and the venerated image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Many parishes are even organizing beautiful cantatas, fluvial processions and Santa Cruzan [in the Philippines] to highlight this pious and beautiful devotion. But the most popular practice celebrating this is the recitation of the Holy Rosaries either at homes or at churches.

The practice gain widespread popularity due to St. Philip Neri who propagated this devotion and many Popes did the same.
